Change Computer Name in Windows 10

Computer name is used for identifying your computer in the network. It is also used by administrators for asset tracking and gaining access to your PC remotely when it’s joined to Active Directory domain. You can use naming conventions if you are renaming many Windows 10 PCs for your company. You can use asset tag ID as the computer name or simply name of user. For example, Bipin-LT if its a laptop, Bipin-DT if its a desktop. This article shows how you can change computer name in Windows 10.

Change Computer Name in Windows 10

Computer name is a combination of letters, numbers and hyphens. There are many ways to change your computer name. The first method is by using settings page in Windows 10.

Step 1. Click start menu and click Settings.

Step 2. From the Settings page, click System.

Step 3. Under System, Select About on the left-pane. And click Rename PC. As you can see above, current PC name is, DESKTOP-9ULQBFD which is created by default when Windows 10 is installed on the machine.

Step 4. Type in the new name and click Next.

Step 5. Click Restart now to restart your PC. Restart is required for the new PC name to take effect.

If you choose to Restart later, you will see new name after restart message as shown above.

Step 6. After restarting your PC, you can verify by going to same Settings > About page.

Method 2:

There is another way to change your computer name through System Properties. Open Run and type sysdm.cpl. It will open System Properties dialog box.

You can see the Full computer name is as shown below – MBG-CL01.

To change the name, click Change. Type new name, confirm the change and restart the PC.

Method 3: 

You can also use Windows PowerShell cmdlet Rename-Computer to rename computer name. Open PowerShell as Administrator and run the cmdlet as shown below,

PS C:\Windows\system32> Rename-Computer -NewName MBG-CL02
WARNING: The changes will take effect after you restart the computer MBG-CL01.

In this way you can rename your computer name in Windows 10.
