After you install Exchange 2010, the very first thing you would want to do is to create some mailboxes. You can start sending and receiving emails only after you create mailboxes in Exchange server. So, in this post I will show steps to create user mailbox in Exchange 2010.
Create User Mailbox in Exchange 2010
There are different types of recipients like user mailbox, room mailbox, equipment mailbox, etc. where user mailbox is the most popular one. User mailbox is a combination of Active Directory user account and a mailbox stored in the database of Exchange server. When you create a user mailbox in Exchange server it is linked with existing or new Active Directory user account. So when you delete a mailbox from Exchange server, the associated Active Directory user account will also be deleted. If you want to delete the mailbox only, then simply disable the mailbox. To create a user mailbox, open Exchange Management Shell (EMC).
Expand Recipient Configuration as shown above. Select Mailbox. From the Actions pane, click New Mailbox.
Choose User Mailbox and click Next.
You have two options to create mailboxes from. You can create new AD user and new mailbox right from here. Or, you can choose to create mailbox from existing Active Directory user. I have already create user accounts in Active Directory. So I have selected Existing users. Click Add and browse existing user account. I have selected Dane Shields as shown above. Click Next.
The alias will be populated automatically or you can type your preferred alias name. You can browse the database where you want to store the mailbox to. You can also apply retention policy, ActiveSync policy and Address book policy. After making the changes click Next.
Click New to create new mailbox.
The user mailbox has been successfully created. Click Finish to close the New Mailbox wizard. The user can now login to the mailbox and start composing emails.
